This photograph was discovered in one of my great-grandmother’s old photo albums, a treasure trove of memories

she captured through the lens of her camera. As a passionate photographer, she carefully documented the lives of her friends and

loved ones. Being one of the few African American nurses in her unit, and often the only woman of color, must have felt isolated and lonely

at times. I’m glad she had a community of women like her to share life with outside of work. Seeing this image of a

group of women gathered in communion, bonding, and savoring life brings me immense joy. It’s fascinating to glimpse what my great-grandmother found

meaningful and intriguing in her world. Through her photographs, I can see the joy permeating her life, which resonates deeply with me

across generations.
